Designing the Winchester Street Mosaic

Winchester Street has a rich and varied history, so what should be included in the design for the mosaic?

Our archive of oral histories and research concentrates on the late 19th century onwards, so we decided to stick to that time period. In October 2014 a group of local residents met at the Winchester Gate pub, where our historian George Fleming gave a talk on some of the more interesting aspects of Winchester Street’s history. There was also opportunity to look at photos and other documents, and at the end of this everyone was asked to write down which things they felt were most important or interesting. From this Joanna, the mosaic artist, created the lovely design that you can see above.
